On this week's Episode title "Elizabeth Banks Wears a Red Dress", Elizabeth Banks says the word of the day and Scott is forced to take action; a mind vacation.

Created, written by and starring Scott Aukerman (co-creator/director/producer, Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis; writer/performer, Mr. Show) and based on Scott's popular podcast of the same name, Comedy Bang! Bang! infuses celebrity appearances and comedy sketches with a tinge of the surreal. In each episode, Aukerman engages his guests with unfiltered and improvisational lines of questioning, punctuated by banter and beats provided by his bandleader, one-man musical mastermind Reggie Watts (Conan). Packed with character cameos, filmic shorts, sketches and games set amongst an off-beat world, Comedy Bang! Bang! delivers thirty minutes of absurd laugh-loaded fun. The series features some of the biggest names in comedy, including Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Tenacious D (Jack Black & Kyle Gass) and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Other guests include Will Arnett (Up All Night), David Cross (Arrested Development), Will Forte (SNL), Topher Grace (Valentine's Day, Spiderman 3), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Nick Kroll (The League), Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad), Chris Parnell (Archer), Paul F. Tompkins (Mr. Show with Bob and David) and so many more.

Podcasts are the hot thing in comedy these days, so IFC's TV-series version of Scott Aukerman's popular Comedy Bang! Bang! show (formerly known as Comedy Death-Ray) is probably just the first in a coming wave of podcast-to-TV adaptations. Obviously an hourlong (or longer) podcast has very different parameters than a half-hour (minus commercials) TV show, and to Aukerman's credit he's created a new concept for the TV version that makes it more suited to the format. But the shorter running time also means cramming in as many strange, nonsensical bits as possible, without the time to let improvisations play out to see how they get from one point to another.

Which is to say that Comedy Bang! Bang! the TV show is really weird, and more in a confusing way than a funny way. It's structured very loosely in the style of a late-night talk show, which seems to be sort of a mini-trend lately (Adult Swim recently debuted its own surreal faux talk show, The Eric Andre Show), but the guests are just there to participate in bizarre comedy bits. There's one "real" guest per episode (in the two available for review, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler), and then actors including Andrew Daly and Thomas Lennon (of Reno 911! and The State fame) play other characters who show up as secondary guests.

Genial host Aukerman improvises bizarre exchanges with the guests, helped by one-man "bandleader" Reggie Watts. Watts is a crazily inventive performer, but his musical contributions are mostly limited to intros and outros around the commercial breaks. Still, he and Aukerman make for a good team, and having Watts on the show is a nice added element that isn't part of the podcast. In the second episode, he gets a sketch to himself, an amusing fake movie trailer parodying inspirational comedies that teach work-obsessed protagonists to appreciate life, and it shows off his potential as a performer beyond the show.
