Collaborator was written and directed by Martin Donovan who also starts in the film alongside David Morse, and Olivia Williams. In the film, Martin Donovan plays Robert Longfellow, a famous playwright who can’t seem to catch a break. His recent Broadway play was met with horrible reviews and an early cancellation, and his marriage is being tested as an old flame (Olivia Williams) has reentered his life during a particular moment of weakness. Retreating back to his childhood home to visit his mother (Katherine Helmond), Robert crosses paths with his childhood neighbor, Gus (David Morse). A right-wing, ex-con who still lives at home with his mother, Gus is Robert’s polar opposite in every possible way. When Gus holds Robert hostage at gunpoint during a drunken reunion gone terribly wrong, the drama unfolds as social status, celebrity and the imminent threat of violence converge, building up to a climax that will leave both men forever changed.

Having arrived, he looks up Emma Stiles (Olivia Williams), an old flame and a movie star who got her career start in his early hit plays. Robert has uncomfortable encounters with Gus Williams (David Morse), a mentally disturbed childhood acquaintance who still lives across the street with his mother.

After pressuring Robert to drink beer and smoke pot, Gus pulls a gun and takes Robert hostage in Robert’s mother’s home while she is out of the house. As the police surround the place, Robert’s imprisonment turns into a poorly depicted national media circus. It turns out that Gus injured a man during a robbery, and the police have come for him.

Collaborator has the tone and structure of an extended one-act play. Its uniformly wooden dialogue lends it the stage-bound feel of a tortured writing exercise, as Robert and Gus go from Topic A to B, C, D and E in a forced, artificial attempt to address issues of class, celebrity, art, and (of all things) the Vietnam War. In the screenplay’s most original conceit Robert leads Gus into role-playing theater games while trying to explain the creative process, but they go nowhere. In a more ingenious film Robert would use them to solve his predicament.

Mr. Donovan’s usually bland, repressed Robert eventually explodes in a rant about American imperialism and the stupidity of jingoistic hawks like Gus. Mr. Morse, who often wears the expression of a man with homicidal impulses, lends Gus the requisite spark of menace. But Gus’s observations are so stagy and unnaturally drawn out that the character’s combustible volatility is smothered in unnecessary verbiage.

It's a thrilling movie that takes the viewer on a roller-coaster ride of unexpected turns. From politics, to fidelity, to war, to crime and seeing the explosive interaction between two very opposite individuals there is surely to be some portion of Collaborator which makes you laugh, become angry, and feel empathy towards the characters. A well thought out and executed film with a highly climactic ending that I enjoyed immensely. David Morse's character is executed very well and by the end of the film, I couldn't help but to feel quite sad for the life which he's led. If you have the opportunity, I'd highly recommend it.
